Planning a vacation to the beach this summer? Did you know that one of the best areas for scammers to steal credit and debit card information is in an area frequented by tourists?
Picture this… you’re on vacation and you take your family out for seafood one evening. You assume because it is a crowded restaurant that your information is safe, so when it comes time to pay the bill, you hand your credit/debit card to your server. He (or she) disappears into that shadowy area where the cash registers are located to run your card…little do you know that your server also runs your card through a tiny skimmer that he carries in his pocket. The next morning, you try to use your card again and it’s declined. Your card has been maxed out or, even worse, your bank account drained. Overnight.
Now what do you do? Of course, you call the credit/debit card company, they cancel the card and tell you that they’ll credit your account, but it might take up to ten business days. Oh, and the new card will be mailed to your home in a couple of weeks…by that time you’ll be back home. Vacation ruined.
It didn’t have to happen. There is a much better way to protect yourself, and no, you don’t have to carry a bunch of cash with you when you travel. It’s actually pretty simple – get a prepaid card! Put just enough money on it to pay for dinner, gas to/from your destination, your accommodations, attractions… whatever you plan to spend money on. Not only will this protect your bank account from a scammer, but you’ll also do a better job of sticking to your budget while you’re away so you won’t go home broke! (This also works even when you’re not on vacation, too.)
And here you thought prepaid cards were only for those who couldn’t qualify for a “real” credit card… maybe, prepaid cards might just be for those who are smart enough to protect their finances wherever they choose to shop, eat, travel, and spend.
